A month after it launched, Diablo Immortal has among the lowest D2R Items Metacritic user review scores of all time: 0.4 on iOS and 0.3 on PC. "Disgustingly constructed," reads one typical review.
On the Apple App Store Diablo Immortal is available, however, Diablo Immortal has a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. "Finally an app for mobile executed right!" comments one user.
In their own way both ratings are just.
Diablo Immortal isn't just a new entry in the long-running action-role-playing game series. It puts Diablo in a fresh context. It has a number of new scenarios, in fact it's designed specifically for mobile devices equipped with touchscreen controls. It's an extremely multiplayer online game with a world shared, where other players are running around. It's co-developed by a Chinese company, NetEase, and, more than any Blizzard game before it, it's been designed with a focus at Asian markets. It's free to play. These are massive sea shifts for Diablo.
However, for any Diablo player -- especially any Diablo 3 player Diablo Immortal will feel comfortingly familiar. The distinctive isometric perspective, fast-paced combat with swarms of monsters, and a wealth of loot fountains are all there. In addition, Immortal has clearly been built on Diablo 3's Diablo 3 engine and uses those assets while maintaining the same feel and feel as that game from 2012 by Blizzard. Immortal's artwork has the same richly colored, golden glow. The combat offers the same intoxicating fireworks display cheap D2R ladder items, and the sound and splatter of sound effects deliver the same deep, Pavlovian satisfaction.
