What is a compression load cell and how does it work?
Compression load cells are one of the main categories or types of weighing transducers commonly used in the weighing industry. Other types include, for example; tension, beam, and single point. Compression load cells, as the name suggests, measure thrust or squeezing force, and are usually installed under the object to be measured or weighed. Unlike tension load cells, they are unidirectional and are only designed to measure downward compression. (Tension load cells are also often able to measure compression).
The actual internal working principle of a compression load cell may be very different. They can be based on sheer, bending, ring torsion, or column measurements. Although very versatile, one of the main applications of these weighing transducers is for very high-capacity static weighing, such as silos and vehicle scales.
