Donated items include seven level 4 ballistic vests, each with two rifle plates, that are rated to stop large caliber and armor-piercing rifle threats, three additional sets of rifle plates, 18 ballistic helmets, and 14 level 3 ballistic vests, which protect against standard ammo types. The items have reached or exceeded the manufacturer’s recommended expiration date – usually 5 years after issuance – and will be destroyed if not used, county documents say.

The county, city of Cleveland and Global Cleveland previously condemned Russia’s attack and said it stood ready to embrace Ukrainian refugees.County Executive Armond Budish also has raised the Ukrainian flag at the administration building in support of the cause. At a previous press briefing, he called on residents to make financial donations to The Fund to Aid Ukraine and to send clothing or nonperishable donations to Bethany Assembly of God in Parma, where over 42,000 Ukrainians live.

Earlier this month, Gov. Mike DeWine called on state and local law enforcement agencies to check their inventories and donate any surplus or expired body armor or helmets to the Ohio National Guard, which is coordinating with the National Guard Bureau and the Department of Defense to distribute them.

“I know many of you share my concern for the Ukrainian military men and women who are bravely fighting against the senseless aggression of Russia,” DeWine wrote in his letter to agencies. “Your response could result in help that could save lives in Ukraine.”
