2020 IAA Muse Design Awards Astronomia SKY
Swiss haute horlogerie Italian design style is back on topic The Italian luxury watch designer Danilo Petta Mask Architects founding partner, former senior product manager of some Omega De Ville product lines, chief watch designer of Purnell, has projects such as Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas ( 2009), Sky Astronomy (2016) and Solar Astronomy by Jacob & Co (2017) won the prestigious 2020 IAA Muse Design Award (Platinum in the Watches category) for Jacob & Co's Astronomy Skywatch.
The project that brought the designer of Sardinian origin "to the podium" was conceived by Jacob & Co, with its futuristic design and extraordinary micromechanical engineering, hoping to elevate the art of watchmaking above time. The author of this micromechanical system is the work of another Italian genius, master watchmaker Luca Soprana, who created the Caliber JCAM11.
By combining the highest levels of Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship, Italian creativity and micro-art deco, the duo have succeeded in creating a watch that hopes to be a visually poetic representation of the sky. Unprecedented in watchmaking, Sky Astronomy was developed over nearly 3 years from the tried and tested Petta-Soprana binomial, introducing a 3D star display and a vertically developed architecture unique in its class, JCAM11 manual movement Working at 21 600 vibrations/hour, 42 jewels, 60-hour power reserve. Available in limited editions in 18K rose gold, white gold and black gold, the Astronomia Sky offers orbital hour and minute dials protected by domed sapphire crystals. Around the rim of the blue titanium disc, visible at the bottom of the watch on the side of the case, you can see the month indicator. A ring polished from solid sapphire glass provides a 360-degree view of the movement.
Everything is controlled by an oscillator, which is at the center of the three-axis tourbillon, which seems to be suspended in space. Looking towards the center of the four-armed movement structure, one can admire a small globe, which is nothing but a representation of the Earth. This Earth orbit has a hemisphere that revolves around it as a day and night indicator. On the back of the watch, there are two winding crowns that can be used for different settings of the timepiece. One keyed crown adjusts the time and day/night indicator (both based on the 24-hour clock, solar time), while the second crown is used to manually wind the mechanical movement. One wheel sets the sidereal time and the other wheel sets the sky indicator.
