Huggy Wuggy, Poppy Playtime's iconic blue monster, has become massively popular among fans, far outshining Chapter 2's Mommy Long Legs.
Who is Mommy Long Legs?
The next installment of Poppy Playtime is scheduled to be released in 2022, but the popularity of Chapter 2's featured monster, Mommy Long Legs, has been overshadowed by Huggy Wuggy. The horror character's popularity has grown so much that MOB Games recently released a plush toy of Poppy Playtime's Huggy Wuggy. Mommy Long Legs, the company's newest character, will have to make quite an impression on players in Chapter 2 in order to surpass the popularity of Huggy Wuggy.
Mommy Long Legs, the new villain in Poppy Playtime Chapter 2, is currently unknown. Many have speculated that Mommy Long Legs is based on the popular real-life Bendy Spaghetty toy from the 1990s, owing to her long, elastic limbs and side-ponytail. Mommy Long Legs, on the other hand, does not appear anywhere in Chapter 1, leaving players with many unanswered questions about her backstory and intentions. Mommy Long Legs "doesn't like guests," according to Poppy's advice in the Chapter 2 trailer, and she warns the player that they're in grave danger because this new villain is always watching them.
When Mommy Long Legs is revealed, she appears to be delighted to have a new playmate in the factory - though, for the player, that prospect is downright terrifying, regardless of her sinister intentions. To add to the mystery, MOB Games shared a mysterious promotional image of Mommy Long Legs on Twitter, along with a secret message about Poppy Playtime Chapter 2, "Make me part of him." It's unclear who "he" is, or if Mommy Long Legs is the one who wrote the message, but it suggests that Mommy Long Legs and the factory's other toys may be part of something bigger and scarier than players may have anticipated.
Poppy Playtime's first installment exploded in popularity after its release on October 12, 2021. Players in the indie survival horror game explore the abandoned Playtime Co. toy factory in search of staff members who have been missing for ten years. Fans take control of an ex-employee and quickly discover that not everything is safe inside the building. The foreboding factory is riddled with puzzles to solve, and danger lurks around every corner. Poppy Playtime monsters, all inspired by classic toys, pose a threat in the game.
Huggy Wuggy, a blue monkey-like toy that chases the main character around the factory, is the first enemy in Poppy Playtime Chapter 1. If this tall and lanky monster captures a player, he consumes them with his shark-like teeth. Huggy Wuggy was the most popular product sold at Playtime Co. in the game at first. His outward appearance is that of a furry toy that appears innocent. In the game, however, he is anything but friendly. This contrast is what makes Huggy Wuggy so frightening in Poppy Playtime. The blue monster has gained popularity online, owing largely to a trend on TikTok and YouTube. Users have been making videos of this toy for a while now, featuring creepy lyrics from the fan-made song "Free Hugs" by YouTuber TryHardNinja. The videos have become so popular that cops have issued warnings to parents about Huggy Wuggy. Mommy Long Legs, unlike Chapter 1's blue furry monster, has not been as well received online.
As reported by Gamereactor, the SteamDB page for Poppy Playtime lists the release date of Chapter 2 as April 29. The “Release Date” section near the top of the Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 page on SteamDB simply says, “Coming Soon.” However, the “Store API Release Date” box at the bottom mentions April 29 as the due date. This information could prove inaccurate, so it’s best to take the SteamDB information with a grain of salt for the time being. A screenshot of the listing in question appears below:
Again, it doesn’t seem as though the above mentioned April release date for Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 is set in stone as of yet. When developer and publisher MOB Games intends to share such details presently remains a mystery, as well. At the very least, fans can rest assured the sequel’s launch remains on track for a 2022 rollout.
The terrifying iconography associated with Poppy Playtime has already become the stuff of legend. Chapter 2 could see the property’s influence elevated further, too, especially if Mommy Long Legs catches on like Huggy Wuggy before her. Unsurprisingly, ongoing talk about what MOB Games has in store for Chapter 2 continues to ignite discourse comparing Poppy Playtime to Five Nights at Freddy’s, another toy-centric horror phenomenon that managed to explode outside of the gaming sphere. It’s possible the MOB Games-created brand will similarly reach the stratosphere in the years ahead.
