Spade drills are generally used for intermediate speed processing between u-drilling and ordinary drills. Generally, the blades are high-speed steel, and the speed is generally below 1000 rpm. Compared with ordinary drills, there is no need for sharpening, which requires lower skills for workers.
The spade drill consists of a steel shank and a blade with a replaceable head. The shank of the tool holder has two structures: side-fixed shank and Morse shank. Side shank tool holders are often used in CNC lathes, CNC machine tools in machining centers, etc. Morse shank is used in traditional equipment such as vertical drills, radial drills, and general trucks. By simply installing a set of cooling ring devices, it is possible to switch from external cooling to internal cooling. The cooling water enters the shank through the cooling ring, passes through the inner cooling hole, and cools directly to the blade part. And high-pressure cooling water is more helpful for chip removal.
There are two types of chip removal form of the tool holder: straight groove and spiral groove. When the workpiece is rotating and the tool is stationary, straight grooves are more conducive to chip evacuation, such as lathe machining. When the tool rotates at a high speed and the workpiece is stationary, helical chip flutes are often selected, such as CNC machine tools, radial drills, etc. According to the aspect ratio of the shank (that is, the ratio of length to diameter), it can be divided into 3D, 5D, 7D, 9D, and even higher.
The blade of the spade drill is divided into two types: carbide blade and high-speed steel blade. Carbide inserts range from 9mm to 32mm. High-speed steel blades range from 9mm-68mm, and some non-standard blades can even be larger. High-speed steel blades are generally M42 cobalt-containing high-speed steel with 8% cobalt, which has good wear resistance and toughness.
The spade drill blade is positioned through the groove, and the two screw holes are fixed in the positive and negative directions, which can ensure that the symmetry of the blade is between 0.01-0.02mm. Depending on the size of the insert, there are generally 2-6 chip breakers. Depending on the material to be cut, the tip of the insert is either an X-shaped drill point or an S-shaped drill point.
