Why is fast food called "fast food"?

Fast food is a type of food, not a business model. The emphasis at a fast food restaurant is on efficiency. Counter service is usually combined with limited menus, planning ahead of time, and optimizing the kitchen workflow.

This method can be used to prepare almost any type of food.

Fast food is the name given to it because it is more alliterative than quick food, which is what it should be called. The food does not have a speed of its own.
