The Nissan Skyline is a very popular Japanese used car. You may have seen hundreds of articles about HAKOSUKA, KENMERI and/or GT-R. Many magazines in Japan have, in fact, repeatedly posted special features of the Skyline. The GT-R and GT gained the most popularity as excellent cars, in other words, highlighted by a 6-cylinder engine. Let’s not forget about the Skyline with a 4-cylinder engine. The second generation of the SKYLINE was released in 1963. The Sport grade ‘GT’ did not exist at the time, and yet, it was a practical sedan preferred by taxi drivers.
In 1964, Nissan produced only 100 units of the Skyline GT. The Skyline GT was a homologation model, which installed a straight-six G7 type engine transferred from the Gloria, intended to compete in the first Japanese Grand Prix. To mount the 6-cylinder engine instead of the 4-cylinder, the engine room was extended and finished with the long nose style.
This facelift gained a very good reputation, and so Nissan began mass production of this model and was released in 1965 as the Skyline 2000GT.Later, the 2000GT-A, with a single carburetor implemented, was added. And then the 2000GT became the 2000GT-B with the WEBER triple-barrel carburetor.
The third generation continued in 1968 with a full-model change. This is ‘Hakosuka’, a skyline famous all over the world among Japanese vintage car fans. The model with a 4-cylinder engine was the first to be released, just like the previous generation. The 6-cylinder, long-nosed GT and GT-R were added later.
The 2-door Hakosuka debuted in 1970. This option was also available for the 4-cylinder engine type, which was no surprise. You can feel refreshed about a two-door, normal-sized engine room for a 4-cylinder as a ‘little nose’!The fourth generation of the SKYLINE, called the ‘Kenmarie’, was released in both 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder variants. In fact, it is little known that a Kenmeri with a 4-cylinder engine was in the product lineup, and therefore the small hood Kenmery is unfamiliar to many of you.
In 1977, the fifth generation of the Skyline, ‘Japan’, was released. It is the last generation that produces both the normal and long nose types. Popularized in Japan by appearing in the famous detective drama ‘Seibu Keisatsu’. The 4-cylinder engine type was called the ‘TI (Touring International)’ and the 6-cylinder engine type was called the ‘GT Series’. In addition, the diesel variant was added in 1980. The LD28 diesel engine had six cylinders which necessitated the long nose design and was codenamed ‘GT’.
