      As the name suggests, this shape of the thermometer uses a spiral bimetallic strip to measure temperature. The pointer is connected by a shaft at the free end of the strip. The strip is spirally wound inside the rod. As the temperature increases, the spiral strip senses temperature changes. Strip-shaped metal with a higher coefficient of thermal expansion expands and winds along the stem, causing the shaft to rotate. This rotation causes the pointer to move in the dial, thereby indicating the temperature of the medium. As the temperature decreases, the metal with a lower coefficient of thermal expansion shrinks and rotates the shaft. The hands than read the lower temperature in the dial.

      They can be placed in thermowells that can operate in high temperature and high-pressure environments, so they are mainly used in industrial applications.

As the temperature decreases, the metal with a lower thermal coefficient forms the inner layer of the arc.
